Jacob Gonzalez, son of Valley legend Luis, is going to be taken in the Major League Baseball draft in the next couple of days.Agents I spoke with this past week say that the TCU signee will either be a second or third round selection. If that’s the case it’s hard for me to see Jacob(Chaparral high school) make it to the TCU campus. San Francisco and Cincinnati are two organizations that like him a great deal. The Giants worked out Gonzalez last week. A 3.9 GPA and a 28 on the ACT make him a sure thing in the classroom, but the dollars of a second day player may be too much. Good luck to the Gonzalez family this week…

Brian_MuellerGrand Canyon University President Brian Mueller isn’t going to sit tight on the future of the WAC. With plenty of smoke out on the national scene that the ‘Lopes are trying to get out of the troubled conference, my eyebrows were raised on Friday with the news that Mueller was named to the 2017/2018 Western Athletic Conference Executive Committee. I sent him a note asking for an explanation of what his role will be, “I will be vice chair and on the executive committee to help move the conference forward especially as it relates to strengthening the membership. We need to grow the conference in terms of numbers and increase the quality of the basketball programs.”  He’s right, on all fronts. Meantime, Jerry Colangelo hinted on our show of potential conference changes for GCU as well. Here’s the link

Don’t be surprised if Phoenix Rising FC announces they are expanding the seating capacity of their current location up to 10-thousand fans. Saturday nights 2-1 win over Whitecaps FC 2 was much-needed for the franchise and also the ownership group. A lot of body blows have been delivered in the first two months of the season(new coach, new players, little chemistry)  Good for the hometown team to have a some success. Kalen Ballage Monster TD runArizona State running back Kalen Ballage has a future off the field when he’s done with football. I was more than a little bit impressed with his interview earlier this week. By the end of our conversation Ballage offered to come in and host the show. Pretty sure I’m going to take him up on the offer.

How many Diamondbacks should be on the National League All-Star game roster next month? Without going through the politics of other teams, Greinke, Goldschmidt and Lamb deserve to be at Marlins Park in Miami for the Mid-Summer Classic…
