Wildcats Could Be Landing Spot For Top WR Recruit Lewis

Joseph Lewis has emerged as the top-ranked receiver in the 2017 class by Scout.com. From one-on-ones to scrimmages to field testing, Lewis solidified that at The Opening this past weekend.

The product out of Augustus Hawkins High School  just outside Los Angeles stands at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. He plays opposite of Jalen Hall, who is a 2018 recruit and the top receiver in that class as well. Even though he already has the size and speed that causes a tough matchup, Scout.com’s national recruiting director Brandon Huffman points out Lewis literally has plenty of room to grow.

“He’s a physical receiver,” Huffman said. “He won’t be 17 until early in his senior year. That means when he gets to college, it will be about a month until he turns 18 so physically he’s still got some growing to do.”

Lewis used The Opening to show he belonged on the national stage. To put it bluntly: He torched defensive back after defensive back, whether it was a jump-ball or a crossing route with a little bit of space.

“It actually helps me build my confidence because I’m supposed to be a top prospect,” Lewis said. “There are other people who want my spot, and there are other people who want to prove a point. I need to come out here and do what I’m capable of doing and that is make plays and just be great.”

Teams like Oregon, UCLA and USC among others are making their case to Lewis, and he said he plans to take official visits to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Arizona. The Wildcats already received a verbal commitment from Lewis’ good friend and teammate Greg Johnson, who can make plays as a cornerback, safety, running back and wide receiver.

“(Johnson) is committed there. We talk and have that tight bond, and we want to play at the same college and stuff like that,” Lewis said. “If it doesn’t happen, we get it, but that’s like my family right there. (Arizona) is in the mix, and with their coaching staff, we talk almost every day and we have a really good relationship.”

Lewis said he plans to go on his official visit to Tucson with Johnson this fall. If Rich Rodriguez has his way, the five-star receiver would be heading back to Los Angeles as a newly-committed Wildcat.
