Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (February 27th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
As was the case in 2013, do you expect it to be another deep quarterback league this fall? “I would argue the quarterback position is going to be deeper this season than it was last season because you got guys like Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel and Blake Bortles…we’ve seen rookies come into the league and make a pretty significant impact: Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson. So, if these guys coming into the league deepen the position, well that’s going to fall right into your draft strategy. You know me…I always wait on quarterbacks.”
Speaking of rookie quarterbacks, peer into your fantasy crystal ball on Johnny Manziel: “If he goes to, say, the Cleveland Browns, really no matter where he goes…if he’s given a chance to start, that guy is going to be worth a late-round pick in re-drafts. Not only can he throw the football but he can run it. We’ve been doing fantasy the past couple years. Brad, you know I love a quarterback who can run with the football. Manziel rushed for over 2,000 yards in two seasons at Texas A&M and had over 20 touchdowns on the ground so he is going to be very intriguing wherever he goes.”
Is it too early to start mapping out your 2014 fantasy football game plan? “Oh, no. The NFL and fantasy football is a 365-day-a-year sport/hobby at this point so you need to pay attention to what’s going on around the league, especially starting in a couple of weeks when you have free-agency which begins March 11th and so many different fantasy implications are going to happen when teams start, not only signing players, but releasing them.”
