Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (November 12th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
Who are your biggest fantasy duds as we sit here in mid-November? “Wow, unfortunately the disappointments are fruitful-let’s put it that way. The first guy that comes to mind is LeSean McCoy. If he hadn’t scored that touchdown [last] week…McCoy got that goal line look, he would have scored fewer than two fantasy points and he’s not scoring a lot of touchdowns and this is a guy who was drafted maybe number one overall and at worst he was the number three pick overall so he’s been a disappointment. Cordarrelle Patterson been a disappointment because there was a lot of hype surrounding him, including me because I really liked him. That’s part of a long list of guys who have disappointed at running back: Montee Ball, Zac Stacy to name a few.”
How about biggest surprises? “The biggest surprises: one of them has to be Ahamad Bradshaw who was basically left for dead and he is one of the 10 best running backs in fantasy football. You’ve also got to think about a guy like Justin Forsett. Wasn’t drafted in most leagues now he is a top 10 running back in fantasy. Last week he put up over 20 fantasy points against a Tennessee Titans defense. Suddenly he’s a guy you’re starting week-in and week-out and in the August and September months when you’re talking about drafts no one was mentioning him so Forsett has been a very pleasant surprise. Honestly, you and I have talked about this in the past, the rookie wide receivers are making an impact this year. That almost never happens! Kelvin Benjamin has been good. Mike Evans has been good. Sammy Watkins has been good. Brandin Cooks has had some flashes…things are changing around the NFL and fantasy landscape in certain aspects but one aspect that never changes is it’s still very unpredictable.”
Is it time to drop Ben Roethlisberger? “No. Wasn’t that hilarious, though? Like I said last week about the fantasy gods being cruel. Roethlisberger goes off against two defenses that are pretty good against the pass: 12 touchdowns. Last week, he plays the Jets. No defense is worse against the pass and Roethlisberger stinks it up! You can’t write this script so you can’t drop him. I mean, he’s got a good matchup this week against Tennessee but I certainly don’t think he’s an elite fantasy quarterback. I never did even when he had those 12 touchdown passes.
