Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (December 10th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.

I have Cam Newton as my starter and am looking for a good name on the waiver wire–who would you suggest? “The first name who comes to mind for me this week is Mark Sanchez because he’s got a really good matchup against Dallas so if he is available on the waiver wire he is a good pickup and play if you do have Cam Newton. Johnny Manziel is another name that comes to mind, too. He’s going to get his first NFL start this week. He can run with the football. When a quarterback can run with the football that’s going to do nothing but accentuate his value so there are a couple of options there. If you’re in a deeper league maybe you go after a Kyle Orton or even Derek Anderson because the matchup this week for Carolina is pretty good.”

Philip Rivers or Russell Wilson? “I’m going to go Rivers but this one’s close. The matchup isn’t great for Russell even though he’s basically been matchup-proof this year. Very close call. I’m expecting a high-scoring game there between the Chargers and the Broncos so I’m going to go with Rivers but again it’s a pretty close call.”

Better play in Week 15: Drew Brees or Ben Roethlisberger? “Brees. I do like Roethlisberger, though against Atlanta. A good matchup. Should be a high-scoring game but I’m sticking with Brees against Chicago their defense has not been good this year.”

Is it proceed with caution on Roethlisberger? “If you look back Roethlisberger has had some really good games and then he’s had some stinkers, too. I mean he had 22 [fantasy points] against the Bucs and then he had 12, 11, 16…those aren’t great games for fantasy quarterbacks. Then he had the two big games when he had six touchdowns each and then the week after that he had 13 against the Jets and everyone thought he would roll the Jets. The following week he only had 10 against the Titans so he hasn’t been reliable and he’s been unpredictable, too. But again…I’m a slave to the numbers and the numbers say he’s a good start.”

Tony Romo or Mark Sanchez? Been struggling with this one. “Im going to go with Sanchez and you know that pains me because I’m a Cowboys’ fan but if you look at Romo’s numbers in Philadelphia over history they’re not really good. They’re not really good at all and the last time Sanchez played against the Cowboys he had over 20 fantasy points. I had said last week I didn’t really like Sanchez. He didn’t even throw for 100 yards against the Seahawks but that’s a bad matchup. When you’re facing a Cowboys’ defense that’s not been good lately and it’s a home game I’m going to go with Sanchez here. Romo has failed to throw for multiple touchdowns in four of his last five games in Philadelphia so even though the Eagles have been bad this year that matchup scares me a little bit.”

General question: who has good match ups this week? “Anyone playing against the Jaguars this week. Which would be guys like Joe Flacco, Justin Forsett. Maybe go with Steve Smith. I like [Jay] Cutler this week. Again, I like Sanchez [against Dallas].”
