Here are some hilights from our most recent conversation (October 9th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
If you have both quarterbacks Monday night, who do you start: Luck or Rivers? “Luck. This is a game of two very good fantasy quarterbacks but the Chargers have given up more points to fantasy quarterbacks than any team in the National Football League. I love Luck this week. Start him.”
In general, what advice do you give people looking to make a trade? “You always want to trade from strength to improve weakness. So, say for example you have four really good running backs and you’re lacking a wide receiver. Well, you’re only going to be able to start two or three of those running backs at any time…so why not trade one of those running backs to a team that has wide receiver depth and help each other out. Another example I use is…if you have depth [at quarterback] go ahead and make a trade. You don’t have to have two star quarterbacks on your fantasy team. Don’t put guys on your bench who can perform extremely well for another team where you can make a deal to acquire a piece that you can add to your starting lineup.”
If you don’t have an elite defense this year, what’s the best way to maximize your value? “Things change week-to-week in the National Football League. Who would have thought the Kansas City Chiefs would have been the highest scoring defense this year? Last year they were one of the five worst. Instead of looking ahead to [picking up] a defense that has good match ups later on in the season, you have to play the match ups week-to-week because, at least for me, I don’t like having more than one defense on my roster at a time.”
Which rookie running back has a bigger upside the rest of the year: La’Veon Bell or Eddie Lacy? “I like Lacy only because I like the team around him better. Neither team has a great offensive line, just ask Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers who have been sacked constantly. I just think Lacy has more of an opportunity to score fantasy points on a regular basis. I do like La’Veon Bell, though. This is really, really close.”
