Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (October 14th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
After his performance last weekend against your Cowboys, does Sam Darnold have fantasy value? “He’s a very good waiver wire pickup because his schedule is really good for him throughout the course of the season. Although, this week against New England you won’t want to start him but pick him up off the waiver wire.”
Another week, another Todd Gurley question. What’s the play with this guy? “You’re hoping that quad injury is not serious and from what I’ve heard from our NFL insider Ian Rapoport he has a chance to play this week against Atlanta which would be great because Atlanta’s defense has been just awful this season. The issue here is that the entire Rams’ offense is sort of a mess right now. Jared Goff looks bad. Robert Woods didn’t catch a pass yesterday and even Cooper Kupp was held in check…keep tabs on Gurley’s status and hopefully he’ll be able to be back this week in what is a really good matchup.”
What’s your advice with Kansas City Chief players moving forward? “So it’s a different scenerio, right? Earlier in the season without Tyreke Hill: Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman ceilings were low but the potential in that offense had them as potential starters, WR2’s or flexes or whatever. Now that Tyreke is back, the targets are a little more thin. Right now it’s pretty clear you’re starting Tyreke every week. [Travis] Kelsey is an obvious starter, despite the fact that he hasn’t put up great numbers and those wide receivers, until Sammy Watkins comes back, are very hard to trust.”
Where does Kareem Hunt fit in with Cleveland’s backfield when he comes back from suspension? “Nick Chubb is playing so well right now, I don’t see them taking that featured role from him. Kareem Hunt could come in and be a pass-catcher, maybe. Come in on third downs. I mean, sure, he’s a playmaker and the Browns are struggling right now. This is an offense that needs playmakers so Kareem Hunt will have a role. If you expect him to usurp Chubb and become the guy like he was in Kansas City, I don’t expect that at all. We’re still a few weeks away from seeing Kareem Hunt on the football field and he hasn’t played football in a while so in a 10-team league, I don’t think he’s somebody you need to pick up immediately.”
I’ve got Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson-what should I do here? “Trade one of them! You know I love Kyler but Russell Wilson is playing at an MVP level right now. Russell has always been a second-half fantasy quarterback. This season that hasn’t been the case. He’s been awesome. It sucks that he lost Will Dissly. That sucks for fantasy owners, too because he was one of the better tight ends in fantasy football. I’ve gotta go with Russell but when you have two quarterbacks at that level-especially with the guys we’ve lost: Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees. Try to make trades. I don’t like to keep really valuable players on my bench because my starting lineup is so [great] I simply can’t play them. So look to make a trade.”
