Feely felt gamut of emotions Sunday

Arizona Sports News online

In sports, you always hear athletes talk about “not getting too high or too low” after a loss.

In Jay Feely’s case, he felt the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in a matter of seconds on Sunday against the Bills.

With 1:14 left in the fourth quarter, and the Cardinals down 16-13, Feely hit a 61-yard field goal to tie the game.

With two seconds left in regulation, Feely would get another chance to play hero and win the game for the Cardinals, but his 38-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright and fell short, sending the game to overtime, where the Bills eventually prevailed 19-16, sending the Cardinals to their second straight loss.

Feely hit on his first three field-goal attempts, but the fourth – perhaps the most important one of all – didn’t come to pass.

“Obviously I was thrilled to make it, but all I care about is winning,” Feely said, when speaking on the 61-yard field goal. “The fact that we didn’t win the game negates everything else.”

Feely thought the game winner was actually tipped on it’s way up.

“I have to watch film, they got a little push and got a hand on it,” Feely said. “I don’t think I’ve had a kick blocked or deflected since 2006.”

Feely talks about the emotional ride he and his teammates took at the end of the game.

“You go from on top of the world to feeling about as low as you can feel when you have an opportunity and you don’t come through, regardless of how it happened,” Feely said. “As a group, we have to make a 38-yard field goal.”

Throughout the game, the Cardinals had chances to make plays and get points, but they didn’t capitalize on the opportunities, which put them in the late game position they were in.

“That’s what we have to get past, we have to make some plays earlier in the game so we aren’t living on the edge,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “It didn’t go the way that we wanted it to, but we fought. We put it in position to win it at the end, we just didn’t execute it.”

Feely says this is a loss that will stick with him for a little while.

“I probably won’t go to bed,” Feely said. “I’ll be a dad, but at the same time, it will gnaw at you and eat at you. Once tomorrow is over, you have to put it beside you. You have to move forward and get ready for [the] Minnesota [Vikings].”
