It was all Grand Canyon University in a battle between the Lopes’ women’s basketball and in-town opponent Arizona Christian University on Tuesday at GCU Arena. Grand Canyon won the game 75-51.
The Firestorm scored on its first possession to take a quick 2-0 lead, but GCU responded with a 7-0 run and never looked back as the Lopes stretched their lead to as many as 24 points three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Grand Canyon had three players in double figures for the game with Jessica Gajewski leading the Lopes with 19 points, followed by Brie Mobley with 18 and August Touchard with 11.
In addition to her 18 points, Mobley also hauled in 11 rebounds.
ACU had two players with double figures – Courtney Christmas with 18 and Makayla Enders with 15.
With the win the Lopes record now stands at 6-8 which ACU is now 11-3.
Grand Canyon’s next contest will be its first WAC conference game against Seattle University at GCU Arena on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Firestorm will tip off versus Vanguard University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the GCU campus.
