No. 1 seeded Chaparral took on No. 4 seeded Hamilton in the second of two semi-final soccer playoff matches Wednesday night.
The Firebirds didn’t know one Husky would nearly extinguish them single handedly: Danny Arrubla.
Arrubla would have a spectacular game, scoring four goals, and leading the Huskies to the upset, 5-0.
With the win, Hamilton advances to the state championship game on Saturday night, where they’ll take on the Brophy Broncos, who defeated Tolleson 3-2 in double overtime earlier in the evening.
Senior Armando Gonzales would get the fifth and final goal of the evening for Hamilton.
Hamilton played excellent defense all night, not allowing many scoring opportunities for Chaparral, resulting in the shutout.
“Coach told us to play our ‘A’ game, and squeeze that diamond and defend as a team,” Arrubla said.
Hamilton will have a tall task in knocking off the defending state champion Broncos on Saturday night, but Arrubla is confident in his team and what they’re capable of.
“We feel that this year is our year, so we’re hoping to take that trophy home,” Arrubla said.
The game is at 6 p.m., and it will take place on the campus of Campo Verde High School in Gilbert.
