Hamilton football upset with AIA scheduling

Arizona Sports News online

The two teams that met in the Division I State Championship game last season and the teams that quite possibly will be the top the top two in Arizona in 2013 are Mountain Pointe and Hamilton.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association scheduled that the two teams will face off in Week 5 of the regular season in 2013 according to AIA journalist Jose Garcia. The scheduling change has come with a lot of controversy.

“I thought the schedules were set and then all of a sudden we find we are playing Mountain Pointe,” Hamilton head coach Steve Belles said over the phone on Tuesday.

Mountain Pointe had four open games on their schedule which was the first item of discussion for representatives of the Division I conference Tuesday. Belles explained that him and his Huskies were set to play Ironwood Ridge that week but now that has changed.

“We are told to get five games and we did,” Belles stated. “I was planning on meeting them (Mountain Pointe) in the playoffs like we have in two of the last three seasons.”

According to Garcia, Mountain Pointe has now added matchup’s against North, Cesar Chavez, Maryvale and Salpointe in addition to Hamilton to their schedule over the next couple seasons.

Belles was asked if there is anything they can do on their end to change the scheduling back or prevent the game from being played. His answer…

“I don’t know, you will have to ask the dictatorship.”
