Higley’s Ty Robinson Bringing Fire to 2018 Knights

Higley defensive end and tight end Ty Robinson has been one of the most recruited players in the state and the country in the 2019 class.

With 22 offers coming from some of the best programs in the Pac-12 and SEC, the nation’s elite programs are looking to add Robinson, who is coming off a 13-sack, 30-tackle for loss junior year.

“It’s crazy. It’s a once in a (lifetime) kind of experience,” Robinson said of his recruitment. “I’m taking it all in. I’m grateful, just sitting down with my family, mapping it all out and going from there.”

Robinson said recently Alabama, Florida, USC, ASU and Utah are some of the programs recruiting him hardest, and Cal, Oregon and Nebraska are already locked in for official visits. He hopes to commit on early signing day in December.

“On the defensive side, he’s a hard guy to block,” Higley head coach Eddy Zubey said. “He commands a double-team, if not a triple team. He’s just getting bigger, so I can’t wait to see him play this year.”

Off the field, Robinson is even-keeled and approachable, but when he takes the field, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound athlete is fiery, often times celebrating when he, or another Higley Knight, makes a big play.

Zubey has told Robinson to embrace that attitude. But it did work against them on one occasion in the state semifinal game against eventual state champion Saguaro.

“In the middle of the season, (Robinson) had made mention he wanted to spike the ball (after scoring) and knew that Zubey would get mad at him,” His coach said. “I was like, ‘If you feel like you need to spike it, spike it.’ Low and behold did I know it would happen in the semifinal game to go up by seven points. He spikes it, and we get a penalty, so I take that on me for bad coaching.”

The Knights have made the jump up to 5A this year, and have plenty of talent throughout the roster to make a state title run. Robinson and the rest of their defensive front seven will set the tone.
