Call it a coincidence. Call it good timing. Call it whatever.
John Skelton is now 2-0 this season as the Cardinals (3-6) quarterback following the Red Birds 21-17 comeback win over the Eagles (3-6) on Sunday.
Filling in for the injured Kevin Kolb, Skelton completed 21-40 for 315 yards with three touchdowns. He was intercepted twice, but put the Cards ahead to stay hitting Early Doucet for a 5-yard touchdown in the final two minutes.
“He made some good plays at the end of the end game,” Ken Whisenhunt said at his Monday press conference in Tempe. “That’s not easy to do when you’ve thrown a couple interceptions…being able to handle that and stay focused and make some plays is obviously a a great sign.”
Whisenhunt said it’s far too early speculate on the availability of Kolb for Sunday’s showdown with NFC West-leading San Francisco, but that hasn’t stopped the buzz of a possible quarterback controversy moving forward.
Kolb, who came over this summer in a deal with Philadelphia, has struggled in his seven starts throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns (eight) and has fumbled six times. His passer rating is 77.8.
So, is there a quarterback controversy here in the Valley?
“I don’t know if you’d call it a controversy,” former Cardinal signal-caller, now NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner told Brad Cesmat on “Big Guy on Sports” Monday. “I still think with what the organization did to get Kevin Kolb here I still believe he’s the guy moving forward.”

Warner wouldn’t go as far as to say Kolb’s job is safe once he returns from his turf toe injury.
“I definitely think there’s a question here in the short-term,” the future Hall-of-Famer told Cesmat. “The way John has played, it just seems like he’s got a better command of the offense right now.”
Regardless of who the starter is Sunday, they better be ready for Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis and the 49ers who are giving up an NFL-low 15.3 points per game and also feature the league’s best run defense.
Kickoff from Candlestick Park is 2:05 p.m. Arizona time.
