Mingus Quietly Running Past Competition in Division III

Cottonwood Mingus’ head coach Bob Young has had a lot of success over the years but for some reason, they have been around a .500 football team and missed the playoffs the last two seasons.

Going into the 2015 season, Young’s group of upperclassman decided that was enough. There was a renewed focus and leadership from spring and summer workouts through the fall that has the Marauders playing as good of football as the Cottonwood community has seen.

“We’ve been good for a long time but we’ve hit a little bit of a lull the last couple of years,” Young told Sports360AZ. “These juniors and seniors really took that to heart and worked so hard in the offseason to try and get us back to where we used to be.”

The team does a lot together on and off the field that the Coach feels plays huge dividends for them on Friday nights.

“Being in a small community, the town really rallies around their football team,” explained Young. “These guys do a lot together. They do a lot of community service, they are in the weight room year-round, over the summer we go to camp in California. There is just a lot of bonding. I think in a big situation in Phoenix, a lot of times they don’t have that opportunity.”

Mingus continues to roll as they drove down to Tempe and knocked off McClintock 30-0 on Friday night. In two consecutive games they have not allowed a single point and have won five in a row.

They face off against Flagstaff next week.
