It didn’t take long for the Arizona Cardinals to complete their search to strengthen the position of running back. Monday, the team announced that they have come to terms on a one year contract with veteran free agent Chris Johnson.
Johnson comes to the Cardinals after playing last season with the New York Jets. On the field he is most known for his 2009 season where he rushed for over 2,000 yards and was named the NFL offensive player of the year. It was reported last week that the Cardinals were talking with Johnsons agent Joel Segal about a potential deal.
Johnson will turn 30 next month.
There is little risk on the field with this signing. The Cardinals had the lowest yards per rush in the NFL in 2014, so if Johnson has any gas left in the tank, this could be a good move.
It’s been a stormy offseason for Johnson, He was shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting and in a separate incident was arrested for openly carrying a weapon.
Andre Ellington and rookie David Johnson are also part of the Cardinals backfield equation.
