First and foremost, thoughts out to Dan Williams and his family after losing his father after a car accident.
The news of why he was not able to take the trip came down after the Cardinals game Sunday, or at least that is when I first heard why, and I can not imagine what he is going through. I truly wish him the best.
To try and put the focus back football if we can, I can’t help but think about what has come out of the Cardinals traveling to New Orleans the last two times they have been there.
I don’t think anyone will forget the hit that Kurt Warner took in the playoff game against the Saints back the NFC Divisional round from 2010 by Bobby McCray. The hit knocked him out of the game which was already pretty much out of reach but also made his retirement announcement I am sure a lot easier. If you don’t remember, here it is…
Fast forward to this past weekend at the Super Dome. Things got off to a similar start with the Cardinals going up 7-0 and scoring on the first possession but then it all going down hill from there. They went on to lose the game 31-7 but it was what came out of it that hurt even more.
Cardinals beat writer for AZCentral Sports Kent Somers tweeted this out early Monday morning…
S rashad Johnson lost top of right middle finger Sunday. Took glove off and finger was still in
— Kent Somers (@kentsomers) September 23, 2013
It turns out it was it was his left middle finger and he lost all down to his first knuckle. Rashad Johnson said after the game it was the most painful injury he had every sustained.
Ummm, yea I would think! You hear of gruesome injuries all the time in football and sports for matter but it’s rare to hear a player lose part of their body!
And that wasn’t all the crushing news that came down from the game. Both LB Sam Acho (broken fibula) and Lorenzo Alexander (lis franc) are done for the season with injuries that they sustained in the game. Alexander was named a captain on the team and Acho has been one of the more productive Cardinals defensive players over the last couple of seasons.
It was a nightmare weekend for the Cardinals and again the trip to the Big Easy resulted in a very unfortunate result more so than just the final score at the end of the game.
Cardinals fans and players should hope they don’t have to take a trip down there again for a long time.
