It’s never too late to make a change.
Jermaine Marshall believed it was in his best interest when he recently announced he was transferring from Penn State to join forces in the ASU backcourt with Jahii Carson in Tempe. One of the Big Ten’s top scorers last season, Marshall will have one year of eligibility remaining after he’s expected to graduate from PSU next month.
The 6’4, 205-pounder said the chance to play with Carson went a long ways towards selecting ASU over North Carolina, Creighton and Florida State among others.
“He’s a great point guard,” Marshall told Pros2Preps.com. “He got freshman of the year. He’s very versatile. He can pass, he can score. Playing with a guy like that…it will help me to drive him and he’ll drive me…hopefully we can feed off each other.”
The addition of Marshall, who averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists last year with the Nittany Lions comes at perfect time after Evan Gordon decided to transfer to Indiana this past spring for his senior season.
“Coming in and getting the opportunity to have more possessions, the possibility of me having the ball more. Going to the Pac-12 is going to be great. I’m looking forward to getting out on the floor and playing.”
Marshall believes his offensive skill-set is a perfect fit in Herb Sendek’s overhauled up-tempo style which has become the norm in the Pac-12.
“You gotta look at that as a great thing,” Marshall, who averaged 16.3 points per contest in Big Ten play told Pros2Preps.com. “Coming in and getting the opportunity to have more possessions, the possibility of me having the ball more. Going to the Pac-12 is going to be great. I’m looking forward to getting out on the floor and playing.”
Another person who helped sell Marshall on ASU was associate head coach Eric Mussleman who’s coached at all levels, including the NBA. A place he hopes is the next step in his basketball future.
“Talking to Coach Muss,” he explained. “He’s just real about the NBA and everything it takes. You can’t really do much but learn from him.”
