Pack Of Wolves In The Backfield Set Tone For Chandler’s Offense

Arizona Sports News online

The Chandler Wolves offense has been running wild. Over the last six games, they have averaged 52 points per game. With the likes of quarterback Bryce Perkins, running back Chase Lucas, and wide receiver Justin Jan, there is plenty of talent that will wreak havoc on opposing defenses on Fridays and eventually Saturdays. Lucas credits the offense’s success to the team’s familiarity and experience together.

“We’ve grown up together and have played together years and years and years. Of course we’re going to click together.”

With running backs like Lucas, Micah Reed-Campos, and Anthony Clay, who are all juniors, and the dynamic Bryce Perkins, there are plenty of home run hitters in the backfield for the Wolves.

“All of us are athletes and we get the job done. We do what we do best when the ball is in our hands. When we hit the open field, it’s incredible what we can do,” Lucas said.

One other wrench in the system opposing defensive coordinators have to plan against is the constant use of fly sweeps where receivers like Kolby Taylor and Terrell Flanigan take handoffs from Perkins and attack the defense laterally.

“It’s amazing. Running to the outside with the threats that we have…it opens up the field for us. The defense when (Flanigan) does the fly sweeps, (the defense) is thinking about that so they don’t sneak up on us in the middle and it’s a great asset to have,” Lucas said.

The Wolves are not short on assets in the backfield. Lucas, Reed-Campos, and Klay combined for six touchdowns in their 55-10 win over Basha on Friday. At 8-1, Chandler is lobbying for the top seed in the playoffs and Lucas says they want to continue their success by working on their blocking schemes.

“There’s bigger competition (in the playoffs), so we need to just press forward.”
