Arizona Cardinals cornerback and punt returner Patrick Peterson has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, for his performance Sunday in St. Louis against the Rams.
Peterson returned a third-quarter punt 80 yards for a touchdown, tying the NFL’s single-season record for most punt returns for touchdown (4).
There are three others who share this record, but Peterson is the only one of the four whose returns have covered 80 yards or more (89, 82, 99 and 80 yards).
He and Jack Christiansen (Lions, 1951) are the only players in league history with four punt return touchdowns in their rookie season.
Peterson won the same award following the Week Nine victory over the Rams, in which he returned an overtime punt 99 yards for the winning score.
Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is the only other Cardinal to have won Player of the Week honors. Fitzgerald won the Offensive Player of the Week following the Week 10 victory in Philadelphia.
