Pinnacle Star Stayed True To MSU

Arizona Sports News online

For nearly 10 months Brian Lewerke never wavered.

In fact, he never as much gave it a second thought.

In this day and age of me-before-we the Pinnacle High star quarterback and Michigan State signee is an exception to nearly every rule in this modern recruiting era.

A trip to East Lansing was all he needed.

“I loved it all,” Lewerke told Sports360AZ.com’s Brad Cesmat during an in-studio sit-down on Thursday morning. “Obviously, I liked them enough to commit.”

Which he did to Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio and a team with back-to-back major bowl victories on their resume including a dramatic, last-second comeback win over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl last month.

After announcing his intentions Lewerke did the complete opposite of what many high-profile players do during the courtship between student-athlete and school. Instead of walking into the public spotlight he, in many ways, walked away from it.

“All the recruiters, all the Rivals guys and Scout guys,” he carefully explained. “They’ll try to throw stuff at you and try to get you to say some stuff that you really don’t want to say about a school. [I] just tried to keep a level-head through it all.”

So what advice would he give to others about to enter the college football recruiting circus?

Keep it simple.

“Make sure the coaching staffs are in to you and you’re into the school before you make a visit,” he said. “Obviously, you can’t be 100% before you make a visit because a visit could change how much you like the school but I think visits are really big to schools.”

Lewerke is planning on becoming an engineering major at MSU.

The 6’3, 180-pounder picked Sparty over ASU, UofA, UCLA, Florida, Ole Miss, Louisville, Oregon State, West Virginia and several others.

A Valley native, Eric has had a passion for the Arizona sports scene since an early age. He has covered some of the biggest events including Super Bowls, national championships and the NBA and MLB playoffs in his near 20 years in local media.
