QB3, Nico and Barcello, Happy Trails Watkiss…

Josh Rosen gives me a reason to watch NFL football in August. Friday night the Cardinals punky QB(he’s not quite Jim McMahon, but there’s one similarity) will take the field at New Orleans with the first team. In Cleveland, New York, and Buffalo fans want to see the rookie get the reps over those who have already toiled in the NFL. In Arizona it feels different. My circles want to see Sam Bradford trot out on September 9th against Washington. My circles believe that Bradford will get hurt ar some point because that’s been his track record. I don’t like to expect the worst, but the law of averages says they are probably correct. Wednesday while listening to Rosen answer questions by the media gaggle, I had flashbacks to dealing with McMahon in San Diego. Rosen didn’t seem to care much for a question or two thrown at him and said as much in his response. McMahon was the same way.  Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer were diplomatic and played along with the media responsibility for the most part during their time here. At least for a day, I got the vibe that Rosen won’t be like that. I really don’t care how he answers questions as long as he can play the game of football at the caliber expected of the 10th overall player taken in the NFL Draft…

I’m not much into nicknames, but QB3 is a good one for Rosen…

I don’t know how good the Cardinals are going to be in 2018, but you can see Steve Wilks gives a damn about his job. While media loved Bruce Arians for his quips and quotes,  I didn’t get the vibe that coaching football in 2017 was his passion. Losing tends to weed out those who don’t have the fire in the belly anymore…

How does Vegas come up with six wins when David Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Chandler Jones, and Patrick Peterson are all on the same sideline? Sam Bradford, Mike Glennon, and a rookie QB, that’s how.I think the wise guys are sleeping a bit on our hometown heroes of the gridiron…

Was at an event at my church last Sunday night and former Cardinal lineman Leonard Davis was in attendance. He looked like he could still play. “I’d be tapping the top of my helmet asking out after about thirty plays” he said with a hearty laugh…

The Valley sports print media landscape will go through a seismic event next week. I was asked by one of those who will be involved that I please sit on the story. Even though almost every sports media person knows what’s going down, my yes is my yes on this one. Options are good for the consumer…

Three cheers for 3TV’s Mike Watkiss, whose final day on the air is Friday. Can’t wait to read the book. One of the best teammates I’ve ever had. Happy trails Mike!…

Former Diamondbacks executive Scott Brubaker is back in town. Bru will be President of the Alliance of America Football League team here in Phoenix.  Could Johnny Manziel be one of his first targets?…

Arizona State football is making up  ground on one of the top committed in-state players, who for now has given an out-of-state “yes”…

If Nico Mannion commits to Sean Miller, where does that leave former Corona Del Sol star guard Alex Barcello? Huge season ahead for the former Aztec, who played sparingly last season for the Cats. Justin Coleman and Brandon Williams give Miller a very crowded point guard spot for the coming season…

Dan Majerle and Bobby Hurley scheduled some great games in November and December this year. Now if they could just play each other in 2019, all would be right in the local college basketball space. C’mon Michael, the fans want this. I know GCU would sign the deal…

Two months left in the regular season for Rising FC and the playoffs are a certainty. They sold out again last Saturday night. I am hopeful that we have a Diamondback playoff game, a Cardinal home game, and a Rising FC match on the same October night. All three would sell out. Different crowd, different clientele. When the story is written about Major League Soccer officially coming to Phoenix, Rising FC in the USL will have already scribbled out the first few pages. A remarkable, whirlwind two-year stretch by the ownership group. In September 2016 Rising FC(then Arizona United SC) were playing games in front of the stadium cleaners and a couple of girlfriends in Peoria…

Friday night, DVR the Cardinals game. Head out to your local high school for the opening night of football. It’s a great way to start a weekend. Dropping in on Casteel vs Centennial is on my agenda…
