Reports came out Saturday evening the Arizona Diamondbacks have outright waived outfielder Yasmany Tomas. azcentral’s Nick Piecoro first reported the news and The Athletic’s Zach Buchanan later confirmed.
Tomas was optioned to Triple-A Reno on March 25th. If no one claims Tomas and the club outrights him to Reno, he would have the option to decline that decision and would become a free agent. Tomas signed a six-year, $68 million deal in 2015, and the majority of that has yet to be paid.
With the added depth acquired in the outfield this offseason in Jarrod Dyson and Steven Souza Jr. joining David Peralta and A.J. Pollock, along with infielders Chris Owings and Daniel Descalso being able to spend time out there as well, Tomas seemed to be the odd man out in the 25-man roster.
When Souza went down with an injury, the club opted to have Dyson and Owings share time in right field over Tomas. In 305 at-bats, Tomas hit .268 with 48 home runs and 163 RBIs while posting a career WAR of -2.4.
