Rubio Helps Suns Now

I like the Ricky Rubio signing by the Suns.

This franchise hasn’t been able to attract a quality free agent in a long, long time. This isn’t the move that is going to get them into the playoff discussion in the NBA Western Conference, but they are better than they were at the start of the day. Remember, the damage that has been done to this once great franchise isn’t going to be corrected in just an offseason or two. For those who wanted DeAngelo Russell. Patrick Beverley, or Goran Dragic, you’re disappointed. But Rubio chose Phoenix over an Indiana Pacers franchise that was a playoff team in 2019. This is a “win”. They now have a quality point guard to put alongside of some young talnted players.

A team that wins 19 games, isn’t going to become a playoff team the next season, unless a superstar comes walking through the door. The calendar is just now turning to July, which means there’s plenty of offseason to go. This team can make all the moves it wants but the bottom line is Booker has to stay healthy, Ayton must make big improvement in year two, and the locker room has to be healthy. The Rubio signing filled a void and gives the team competance at point guard. Something they’ve been lacking for the last couple of seasons.

Looking ahead, I’d like to see Nico Mannion, from UofA, end up in a Suns uniform on draft night next year.
