The recruiting calendar usually gets a little crazy when July wraps up and it turns to August. A lot of incoming want to commit or narrow their offer lists prior to the start of the season.
There was a ton of news around the Saguaro Sabercats, so I swung by last week to catch up with some of the 2020 playmakers who have had some recruiting news.
Ringo Visiting Georgia
Last month, Sabercat cornerback and top recruit in the state Kelee Ringo narrowed his list to Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon and Alabama. Ringo told me could “pull the trigger” on a commitment when he feels his mind is made up, and that could come at any time. He was impressed when he previously visited Georgia and has a visit set this weekend with the Bulldogs. Here’s what he hopes to accomplish on this trip:
Covington Sets a Commitment Date
Jacobe Covington has had a busy spring with visits and has been playing all around the secondary, whether that’s been at safety, corner or nickel. The defensive back set his commitment date for October 1st. He felt by that point, he’ll be in a spot where his mind will be made up. He doesn’t have dates set up for future official visits, but he plans to check out LSU and Texas A&M. He explains what he hopes to learn on those visits and what jumped out to him on his Washington visit:
Tyler Beverett Breaks Down Commitment
The dual-threat quarterback did not throw an interception after September 1st last year and didn’t throw a pick against an Arizona opponent. He was out for a few games due to injury in that span, but you can’t ask for better ball control than that. Beverett committed to Bucknell last week, and he explained why the Patriot League program jumped out to him:
Matt Polk Weighing Offers
Wide receiver Matt Polk has been dominant at the varsity level and in the 7-on-7 circuit. He has already visited Oklahoma State, where his father played, and Cal. He could be a part of quite the pair at wide receiver with Chaparral and Cal commit Tommy Christakos. He describes that potential offense as well as how ASU has recruited him:
Jaylan Jeffers Taking Time, Narrowing Visits
The Sabercat offensive tackle released his top-eight and USC quickly offered him, so he is considering nine schools right now. He’s taken official visits to Oklahoma State, Oregon and Colorado. The Trojans will also receive an official visit and the fifth visit is to be determined. He said he has no issue taking his time with this decision. Like Polk, the Cowboys are in the mix for Jeffers, who is good friends with Oklahoma State commit Cade Bennett.
Israel Benjamin Close to Cutting List
Benjamin burst onto the scene with 1,675 and 27 touchdowns in his first year as the featured back for the Sabercats. The Ivy League has been all over the running back, who has aspirations to be a NFL general manager one day. It seems like he is ready to narrow that list a bit.
Saguaro kicks off their season with Poston Butte on August 23rd.
