Things started slowly for Saguaro on Saturday night in the Open Division semifinal against Hamilton.
Penalties and missed opportunities early on for the offense helped Hamilton take an early lead, but the defense stepped up in some short fields to keep the game close at 16-6 at half.
Then, things began to click for the Sabercats. Quarterback Tyler Beverett, who had the best game of his career according to head coach Jason Mohns, hit Xander Werner to make the game 16-13. Saguaro took it’s first lead in the fourth quarter after a spirited touchdown run by Will Shaffer. Defensively, they wouldn’t give up a point in the second half.
But it got pretty darn close.
Hamilton had a long drive at the end of the game and was within the 10-yard-line, but Saguaro was able to outlast the Huskies’ 4th down play, and they’re heading to the Open Division title game after winning 20-16 on Saturday.
Up next, the Sabercats will take on top-seeded Chandler on December 7th. The winner will be the true chapion of Arizona high school football.
