Off-Season work has created elevated confidence for Kory Wilson

Arizona Sports News online

Liberty’s quest to reach places they are yet to reach as a school in 2014 got off to a very good start as they knocked off Ironwood Ridge in an opening week rematch, 24-20.

A player in particular that looks to have taken his game to another level coming into the season is the Lions senior defensive back, Kory Wilson.

Wilson has noticeably added size and speed, but it was his training parter this summer which aided him in the improvement in his body and in his game. He spent much of the summer with former Desert Mountain star and freshman Oklahoma wide receiver Mark Andrews while working out with Showtyme performance. Facing off with Andrews in one-on-ones from much of the summer has helped Wilson to round into the stud he plans to be in 2014.

“He personally made me a more physical corner,” Wilson said. “He came out with the mindset every day that he was going to get better today and you know I am not going to let him all over me so I had to get it done too.”

“I thank Mark personally for me being where I am at now,” he added.

Having the confidence to succeed against a guy like Andrews could help give Wilson the confidence to go one-on-one with just about anyone the state has to offer. But takes that mindset without overlooking any opponent.

“I have a lot of confidence when I play but at the same time I’ve got to respect the guy I am playing against,” he explained. “You can get beat at any time. So it is all about your technique and how hard you work to keep that technique and your discipline. That’s what will make you a great player.”

Wilson picked up his first college scholarship offer over the summer from Navy and has received a lot of interest from many other schools at the next level as well. There are aspects of his game that those next level coaches like and are also looking for improvement which is what Wilson strives for each and every game.

“They definitely like my ability in playing through the ball,” Wilson mentioned. “What I need to work on which I think I got a lot better with over the offseason is my tackling.”

Wilson and the Lions are 1-0 and have a big matchup against Desert Edge next week.
