It has already been a special season for the Seton Catholic girls basketball team with their Head Coach Karen Self becoming the winningest basketball coach in the state. But Coach Self and her Sentinels finished the season with an exclamation point, winning the Division II girls state title game, 52-44 over Peoria.
Both teams had to get the jitters of playing in the big game early as both struggled shooting from the floor.
Sophomore Heather Heild got the Sentinels going scoring six of her teams first seven points in the opening quarter.
CeCe Pearl did everything for Peoria. When the Panthers needed a bucket she was as close to automatic as you’ll see. She had a game high 24 points.
In the second half, Seton Catholic leaders, junior Ann Marie Holter and sophomore Julia Barcello started to take over. Holter made clutch hoops down the stretch finishing with 13 points and five assists. Barcello had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Despite originally believing this year would be a rebuilding year after losing five seniors a season ago, Karen Self and her Sentinels are state champs for the third consecutive season. For next year, Seton Catholic is only losing three seniors and maintaining the core of their team.
