Salt Lake City, UT — Creedence Clearwater Revival played over the sound system of Rice Eccles Stadium. The fans sang along to “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” on a soggy, cold, night here in Salt Lake City. The Sun Devils couldn’t keep up with the elements, the yellow flags, and ultimately the scoreboard in a sloppy 21-3 loss to Utah. One could say the Sun Devils lost their composure by committing 12 penalties for 122 yards, but the argument could be made that this was simply two of the best teams in the Pac-12 playing at a high level to keep their share of first place.
The numbers would say otherwise. Utah limited the Arizona State offense to just 136 in total yards (just 25 yards through the air). Meantime, the Utes would run over, through and around the Sun Devils for 151 yards on the ground. Time of possession was clearly in favor of Utah, who controlled the ball for nearly ten more minutes than the visitors.
The Utes smacked freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels in the mouth early and often. Even though the offensive line was shuffled during the game, it wouldn’t help Daniels who finished a pedestrian 4-18 for 25 yards through the air. He would rush for just eight yards on 16 carries.
The Sun Devils are back on the road next Saturday at UCLA.
