The Sun Devils are doing their part to lend a hand to those families in Oklahoma who are trying to make it back from the tornado that ripped through their state last week.
Arizona State is partnering up with the Red Cross and various athletic departments in other schools around the United States to hold a relief drive, which is currently ongoing on the Tempe, Ariz., campus.
There are donation locations setup on the first floors of the Carson Student Athlete Center and Memorial Union. Persons wishing to drop off donations can do so until 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Locations will also be setup at the front gate of Farrington Stadium on Saturday and Sunday during the NCAA Super Regional games.
If you’re interested in giving, you can give monetary donations, canned goods, non-perishable foods and baby formula.
Sun Devil softball head coach Clint Myers says he and his team will be traveling to Oklahoma in order to deliver everything that’s collected to the local Red Cross.
“In some small way, maybe we can give them a piece of their lives back,” Myers said. “For the devastation, you can’t really replace any of that, but just trying to help out in any way we can is what we’re after.”
Myers counts his blessings each and every day he’s able to wake up and “hit the ground.”
What transpired in Oklahoma last week and what’s happening now has really helped Myers put everything in his life in perspective.
“We play a game, a game that matters, a game that teaches lessons, but it’s still a game,” Myers said. “It’s a game to teach life lessons.”
“The bad thing about what’s going on in Oklahoma is [that] it is about life lessons,” Myers said. “It’s about how a community is coming together.”
“My family is so important to me, and to watch the devastation, the tears [and] the anguish that you see on television, you just thank God that it’s not you,” Myers said. “I would not want to go through what those folks are going through right now.”
