Almost a full house at the new Grand Canyon University Arena on Wednesday night were the Suns participated in an inter-squad scrimmage. The scrimmage was open to Students of GCU and season ticket holders.
It was treated much like any other game with the Gorilla, Suns Dancers, officials and more. Earlier in the week Alvin Gentry did mention that the team would treat this like a third pre-season game.
The black team consisted of Steve Nash, Marcin Gortat, Channing Frye, Jared Dudley, Josh Childress, Ronnie Price and Marcus Landry. And coached by Bill Cartwright and Igor Kokoskov.
Their opponent, the white team, consisted of Grant Hill, Robin Lopez, Shannon Brown, Hakim Warrick, Sebastian Telfair, Garret Siler, Jeremy Hazel and Dwight Buycks. And coached by Dan Majerle, Noel Gillespie and Corey Gaines.
For four ten minute quarters this was a close game but Steve Nash and the black team came out the winner, 68 to 61.
“To get the chance to get a morning off and rest our legs and then come out and play a game tonight was a lot of fun,” Said Nash after the game.
Channing Frye led all scorers with 17 points and added seven rebounds to lead the black team.
It was the Suns fans first opportunity to see Shannon Brown who led the white team with 16 points.
“It was fun!” said new Sun Shannon Brown. “It was fun to get out, get through the flow, get through the plays and the defense.”
The one player missing from the game was Markieff Morris who sat out of the game with a hurt knee. Morris sustained the minor injury after banging knee’s with Ronnie Price in Tuesday nights practice.
Suns will continue training camp two-a-days from Grand Canyon University leading up to their first Pre-season game in Denver next Tuesday.
