That was the last time ASU football took the field for a game at Sun Devil Stadium.
COVID-19 shortened the Pac-12’s season, and positive cases within the roster and coaching staff, including head coach Herm Edwards, knocked out half the Devils’ season after their Week 1 loss to USC.
It was a win in itself to return to the field in front of a small crowd of family members, media members and cardboard cutouts. But on the scoreboard, UCLA pulled out the road win, beating Arizona State 25-18. The Bruins took a 17-3 lead into halftime and pushed ahead with 1:08 remaining. The Sun Devils overcame a slow start to score 18 unanswered and hold a one-point lead in the final minutes, but a fumble on the UCLA one-yard-line and a Jayden Daniels red zone interception meant ASU could not pull away and shut the door, giving the Bruins a lifeline and eventually the win.
ASU is scheduled to play against Arizona on Friday in a Territorial Cup matchup. The Pac-12 is also planning to hold the following weekend open for one more contest with those matchups yet to be determined.
