UA and ASU on Chaparral stars’ radars

Arizona Sports News online

Recruiting in state is one of the biggest goals for both in-state schools and there is no better year to follow through with that goal with the upcoming 2014 senior class. It is loaded with talented at just about every position imaginable.

Two of those stars of the 2014 class reside at Chaparral high school and both can play multiple positions. 6-6, 240 pound tight end and defensive end Trevor Wood and also 6-1, 200 pound Tyler Whiley both hold close to ten division I college offers and have many more that will come in.

For now, Whiley and Wood, who are close friends on and off the field, are putting in extra work and have a lot to prove as spring practice begins. For Trevor Wood, he believes that no one has even seen a glimpse of what he is capable of after missing half of his sophomore season because of an illness and most of his junior year because of injury.

“I definitely feel like nobody has seen what I am capable of yet,” Wood explained. “So I am excited to show what I can do.”

Wood currently holds offers from U of A, ASU, Boise State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah and Washington. He is being recruited at both the defensive end and tight end positions but see’s himself playing tight end at the next level.

Tyler Whiley has seen his recruitment explode since we saw him last on the football field last fall. He has gained all offers in that time which include U of A, ASU, Oklahoma, Oregon State, UCLA and Washington. He is being recruited at both the wide receiver and defensive back positions.

“Right now I don’t know, I just kind of want to see over the spring which position I get batter at and during the season too” Whiley explained. “I like receiver a lot but I really like DB too so I won’t make a quick decision yet.”

The in-state schools are very much on Whiley and Wood’s radar. Wood’s dad and brother are Wildcats and both Whiley and Wood played for Charlie Ragle before he joined the Arizona coaching staff. Despite the Wildcat ties, Arizona State is still very much on their radar.

“They’re both real good,” Whiley mentioned. “They are both schools that are going to be on the rise in the coming years.”

“ASU had their tight end catch a lot of balls. I think it was around 62 catches which was a school record,” Wood added. “Arizona, the same thing. They have my former coach over there. Rich Rod is doing great things, building new facilities. Their tight end spot is on the rise there too.”

Wood, Whiley and their Firebirds continue spring practice until May 16th.
