With McCoy out, Cardinals options for HC dwindle

Arizona Sports News online

First Andy Reid, now Mike McCoy.

The word on the street is that McCoy will become the new head coach of the Chargers sometime on Tuesday, which would obviously cancel the meeting he and Cardinals team president Michael Bidwill had scheduled.

If you recall, Bidwill was set to reach out to Reid as well for an interview. Then the Chiefs came along and snatched him up to be their head coach.

What’s left for the Cardinals to do now that a second target has decided to go elsewhere?

Unless a mystery candidate pops up, Arizona has three candidates left in play: defensive coordinator Ray Horton, Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley and Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

Haley is the only one of the three that has any head coaching experience, but the way the head coaching trend has gone the past couple of weeks outside of Reid, teams are turning their attention toward first-time head men.

The Browns have Rod Chudzinski as their head coach, the Bills have Doug Marrone as their head coach and it looks like the Eagles have hired former Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley as their head coach.

There are now reports out that are saying Haley set his asking price for the Cardinals head coaching job “very high,” and made an inordinate amount of demands to Bidwill during their interview last week.

In being around Bidwill and seeing how he operates, I can tell you that he doesn’t seem like the kind of person who caves into a person’s demands easily.

Now whether that’s true or not with Haley and Bidwill, and whether or not that eliminates him from consideration, remains to be seen.

The search rolls on for the next Cardinals head coach…
